Hockey X-Women beat TMU in shootout

Montreal, QC – The STFX X-Women wrapped up pre-season exhibition tournament action at the Theresa Humes Cup with a 6-5 shootout victory over the Toronto Metropolitan Bold Sunday afternoon. With the win the blue and white finish with a 2-1 tournament record at the event hosted by Concordia.

The teams played to a scoreless first period with the Bold holding a 10-8 shot advantage.

They got on the board two minutes into the second period with a power play marker, but the X-Women responded with goals from Tea Pearce and Joanna Martinson.

The Bold tied it up late in the game as the scored was tied 2-2 after 40 minutes of play. The X-Women had a 12-7 shot advantage in the middle frame.

The third period saw a flurry of goals from both teams as each squad found the back of the net on three occasions.

The X-Women went up 4-2 with scores from Kameryn Lahey and Alyssa Fitt. Megan Breen closed the gap at 8:45 with a goal for the Bold.

X-Women defense Ella VandeSompel re-established the two-goal STFX lead as they were up 5-3 with six minutes to play, but TMU came back and scored a pair of goals late in the period, including one on the power play with just under a minute to play in the game.

After an overtime period didn't decide anything the teams went into a shootout.  

X-Women goalkeeper Maggie Johnston stopped two of the Bold shooters and X's second shooter freshman forward Ireland McCloskey connected for the game winner to lift the blue and white to the 6-5 win.

Johnston had 19 saves in the X net as the X-Women outshot the Bold by a 32-24 margin.

The weekend games marked the final ones on the exhibition schedule for the X-Women who went 3-2 in pre-season action.

They will open AUS regular season play at home on Friday night, October 6th when they host the Mount Allison Mounties in a 6:00 pm game at the STFX Keating Centre.
