X-Women drop two close games to Lancers
The CIS ranked No. 6 X-Women hockey team dropped a pair of exhibition games to the Windsor Lancers from the OUA conference. Friday night at the StFX Keating Centre the Lancers skated to a 4-2 victory, then followed up with a 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon.
In Friday’s 4-2 win, Ally Strickland’s power play goal 4:35 into the third period gave the visiting Lancers a 3-2 lead which they would hold onto as they finished off with an empty netter. Player of the Game Bree Polci assisted on Strickland’s power play goal, banged in off a rebound in front of the StFX net.
The Lancers held a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play. Allssya Baldin opened the scoring in the game with a power play marker at 8:43. Candace Kourounis and Natalie Barrette picked up assists on the play.
The X-Women tied up the game when freshman forward Schyler Campbell scored at 14:26. Campbell picked up a Brittney Perkins pass and was left all alone in front of Lancers goaltender Karlyle Robinson as she made no mistake.
Polci re-established the Lancers lead just over a minute later at 15:50. After an awkward bounce of the puck off a station to redirect the play back towards the StFX zone, Strickland fed Polci the puck who went in alone against StFX netminder Katie Greenway and notched the Lancers second goal of the game, giving them a 2-1 edge after twenty minutes of play.
In a second period which saw three Lancer and two X-Women penalties, the only goal of the middle frame came off the stick of StFX’s Sara Kaljuvee. She scored a shorthanded marker at 17:05 off an Alex Normore pass. Normore brought the puck up ice on a 2-on-1 and Kaljuvee converted on the pass to beat Robinson in the Windsor net.
With the 2-2 tie after 40 minutes of play, Strickland’s third period power play marker proved to be the difference in the game. The Lancers rounded out the scoring with an empty net goal scored by Baldin, her second of the game, at 19:30. Barrette picked up the helper.
Robinson made 26 saves in the Lancers net to pick up the game while Katie Greenway with 25 saves, took the loss for StFX. Shots were close at 29-28 in favor of Windsor.
The same two teams played another close game on Saturday afternoon with the Lancers again coming up with the win, this time 3-2. The visitors scored two goals only 20 seconds apart, late in the second period.
After playing a scoreless first period, Candace Kourounis broke the goose egg with a Lancers goal 3:24 into the second frame. Kourounis one-timed an Allssya Baldin pass to beat StFX goaltender Kristy Garrow after the Lancers came back up ice following several key X-Women scoring chances. Daniela Falconio was stopped by Robinson on a shot alone in front, while Normore was also denied on a couple occasions by the Lancers goalie. Jillian Rops also picked up an assist on the Kourounis goal.
Alanna Grosutti tied the game with a StFX goal at 18:16. She backhanded a pass in the slot to beat Robinson up high as Molly MacDonald and Normore assisted on the play.
The tie did not last long, however, as Candice Chevalier scored for the Lancers a minute later at 19:16 to re-establish their one goal lead. Chevalier scored off a point shot following a faceoff, with Lindsay Hoogstraten and Jenny MacKnight picking up assists.
MacKnight then made good on a Chevalier pass just 20 seconds later to give the Lancers a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.
The X-Women battled back in the third period as freshman forward Taylor Dale scored at 12:02 to put them within a goal. Brittney Perkins assisted. The Dale goal would stand alone in the third period, however, as the Lancers held on for the 3-2 win, their second in as many days.
Karlyle Robinson picked up her second win of the weekend, making 23 saves in the Lancers net, while Kristy Garrow was tagged with the loss, posting 22 saves for StFX. Shots were even at 25 apiece. MacKnight picked up player of the game honors for her two-point performance for Windsor.
The Lancers will be playing the Saint Mary’s Huskies in Halifax on Sunday afternoon. The X-Women resume action next weekend when AUS regular play begins on Jan. 5th. StFX will host the Moncton Aigles Bleues Saturday afternoon, followed by a Sunday game against the CIS No. 10 St. Thomas Tommies. Puck drop both days is 2:00 pm at the StFX Charles V. Keating Centre.
