Cancer Awareness

Since the 2006-07 season, various X-Women and X-Men teams have hosted Cancer Awareness Games in an effort to raise funds for breast cancer and prostate cancer research, two very important causes for diseases that touch so many lives.

 

Breast Cancer Awareness

The X-Women Basketball team has hosted the 'Drive for a Cure' breast cancer fundraiser event since 2006. In conjunction with the CIS Women's Basketball Coaches Association, each year all CIS women's basketball teams the pick one home game date as their Drive for a Cure event and ask fans to wear pink clothing to the game in an effort to create awareness on breast cancer. To raise funds, the X-Women have sold pink StFX basketball T-shirts, pink socks, bracelets, wristbands, ball caps and collected donations for pink awareness ribbons. Proceeds have also been generated from 50/50 ticket sales, raffle tickets for prize draws, tickets on pecialty pink StFX merchandise and by donating their hair to make wigs for cancer patients. All funds have been donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Atlantic Division.

The X-Women Hockey team has hosted a 'Pink in the Rink' event since 2013-14. At one home game fans are asked to wear pink clothing to the rink in an effort to create awareness on breast cancer. To raise funds, the X-Women have sold pink merchandise, collected donations for pink awareness ribbons, had silent auction prizes and donated proceeds from 50/50 ticket sales. All funds have been donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Atlantic Division and to Cathy's Place cancer resource center at the local Saint Martha's Regional Hospital.

Prostate Cancer Awareness

The X-Men Basketball team and X-Men Hockey teams have hosted various Prostate Cancer Awareness games, dating back to 2009 in an effort to raise awareness for prostate cancer, a disease affected many men and their families. Donations have been collected in exchange for prostate cancer lapel pins and light blue awareness riboons. Funds raised from 50/50 sales and raffle tickets on specialty StFX merchandise also support the cause. All funds generated from Prostate Cancer Awareness games have been donated to the Canadian Prostate Cancer Network.

Movember

The X-Men Hockey team, along with StFX Athletics & Recreation coaches and staff became involved with the Movember fundraising campaign in 2012. Athletes, coaches and staff grow their moustaches throughout the month of November and canvassed for donations to support the cause. Donations were also accepted at X-Men home hockey games throughout the month.

Over the past decade, over $14,000 has been donated in support of cancer awareness and research on behalf of StFX teams and our supportive fans!
