X-Women take first place in Moncton Invitational, send split squad to Lehigh meet

Moncton, NB – The STFX X-Women took top team honours at the Moncton Invitational on Saturday afternoon on the field adjacent to the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena on the Universite de Moncton campus.

In the final women's team standings, the X-Women finished first with 25 points, followed by Dalhousie (60), Acadia (93), UPEI (103), Memorial (105) and Moncton (137).

Lauren Lowther of the Dalhousie Tigers was the first to cross the finish line, completing the 8km run in 32:06, 13 seconds ahead of Breanna Sandluck (32:19), and 17 ahead of Taylor Rasmussen (32:23), both from the STFX X-Women.  

Julia Cameron (32:37) and Tanna Burke (32:46) placed in the top ten for STFX, crossing the line in fifth and sixth places, respectively.

Rounding out the X-Women results were Natasha Chojnacki (9th, 33:30), Bridget Keedwell (15th, 34:00), Brynn Hebert (19th, 34:40), Maya Black (21st, 35:02), Quincy Rotsaert-Smith and (34th, 37:44).

The X-Women had a split squad for the weekend as five of their team members were in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for the Lehigh Invitational race that took place on Friday.

STFX competed in the fastest of three races with 135 teams and 417 total racers in the women's university gold 6K race.

Three of the five X-Women competitors were feeling under the weather and four were able to complete the race. Allie Sandluck placed 150th overall with a time of 21:13.

Eileen Benoit was close behind in 157th at 21:15, followed by X-Women teammates Mairin Canning (299th, 22:09) and Caroline Ash (355th, 22:37). Caden Lee did not finish.

X-Women head coach Eric Gillis noted that, "The X-Women are hungry to be better this year and we think this will set up U SPORTS in Halifax for us. We raced the best of the best and didn't back down."The X-Women will next see action on Saturday, October 8th when they travel to Quebec City for the RSEQ Interlock meet.
