Tommies win in overtime over X-Women

Fredericton, NB - In a thrilling game that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the St. Thomas Tommies overcame a 3-1 deficit to defeat the STFX X-Women Saturday night at Grant Harvey Arena.

STFX came out strong, taking an early lead in the first period as Ashlyn Garnett scored the first goal at 18:10, assisted by Joanna Martinsen and Anna MacCara.

The Tommies refused to back down, leveling the score with a shorthanded goal scored by Ekaterina Pelowich midway through the second period.

The game intensified in the second as STFX soon widened their lead, netting two more goals scored by ​​Maggy Burbidge at 11:30 and Ireland McCloskey at 14:34. Despite the mounting pressure, St. Thomas did not back down and displayed composure. Pelowich added another goal for STU before the period ended to shorten the STFX lead to 3-2, assisted by Nadia Lavoie and Laura Brown.

As the clock ticked in the third period, the Tommies were able to tie the game again, with a power play goal scored by Lauren Smith assisted by Jacey Dane and Amber Daley.

The game remained tied through to the end of regulation, despite the X-Women outshooting the Tommies 49-20.

Laura Brown scored the winning goal 54 seconds into the overtime period for STU, assisted by Amy Dvernichuk.

"We had a great game tonight, it was the first start for Eli Campbell in AUS," noted Tommies head coach Peter Murphy following the game. "It was a big challenge for her to come out against STFX and played the game that she did. Really proud of the team and big night for Eli for sure."

Campbell had 47 saves in the STU net for the win and was named first star and player of the game. Tommies Laura Brown was the second star and STFX's Ireland McCloskey was third star.

STFX will be playing their next game on October 27 when they host UNB, while St. Thomas will head to Moncton on October 28.
