X-Men down Sea-Hawks 3-1
X-Men remain undefeated on the AUS season with a 3-1 victory over the Memorial Sea-Hawks
Antigonish, NS – The STFX X-Men remain undefeated on the AUS season with a 3-1 victory over the Memorial Sea-Hawks Sunday afternoon at STFX Stadium.
With their second win in as many days, the X-Men improve to 5-0-2, tied for first place in the AUS standings. The Sea-Hawks fall to 3-4-1 in fifth place.
Veteran X midfielder Logan Rieck (Cambridge, ON) opened the scoring by notching a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the game. For his first one, he one-timed a header off a nice cross from Sam Barrowcliffe (Princeton, ON) two minutes in. He then tallied three minutes later, depositing a pass from Charlie Waters (Blackpool, ENG) after he split the Sea-Hawks defenders on a nice through ball.
Waters scored the X-Men's third goal in the 22nd minute as he picked up a loose ball outside the 18-yard ball, wheeled around and delivered a hard shot past MUN keeper Louis-Charles Vallian (Sherbrooke, QC).
The X-Men controlled the majority of the possession throughout the opening half. The Sea-Hawks broke through in the 36th minute, however as midfielder Cabhan O'Keefe (Clarenville, NF) took a pass from Colin Connors (St. John's, NF) and scored on a low shot past X-Men keeper Sam Diltz (Newmarket, ON).
The 3-1 STFX lead held through to halftime as the home squad outshot the Sea-Hawks 14-2 in the first half.
Waters had a great scoring chance for the X-Men 14 minutes into the second half with a bicycle kick that went just wide of the Sea-Hawks net. Rieck then sailed a shot high two minutes later.
The teams settled in during the second half as neither side found the back of the net.
Diltz made a save directly off a corner kick by Sea-Hawks fullback Brent Hennebury (Lawn, NF) in the 78th minute. The Sea-Hawks did not threaten with any further chances in the half.
With no scoring for either squad in the second half the X-Men held on to the 3-1 victory. Rieck was named the Gabriel Pizza STFX player of the game. O'Keefe was named player of game for Memorial.
The Sea-Hawks will be back in action next Friday, October 4th when they host Moncton at 5 p.m. The X-Women are also at home next weekend, hosting Acadia, also at 5 p.m. on Homecoming weekend.
