ANTIGONISH, NS - The STFX X-Men completed a six-point weekend, thanks in part to a 4-0 victory over the UPEI Panthers Saturday night at STFX Stadium.
The X-Men came out quick in the opening half, netting two goals in the first eight minutes of play. Logan Rieck (Cambridge, ON) was first on the board less than two minutes into the game, driving one into the corner from the top of the box after getting a pass from Charlie Waters (Blackpool, ENG). Only a few minutes later, Dyan Vil (Ottawa, ON) pounced on a through ball from Waters and put one home to give STFX a two-goal lead.
The fast pace continued for the rest of the half, with the Panthers trying to get back into the game and STFX looking to extend their lead. The intensity also picked up, with each side earning a yellow card in the first 45 minutes.
The majority of UPEI's second half featured a man-down squad, as a red card was received in the first two minutes.
STFX's Kyle Cordeiro added to the X-Men's tally in the 54th minute, after picking up a pass from Jack Kennedy inside the 18-yard box and depositing a shot in the bottom corner. Rieck added his second goal of the game in the 77th minute, pouncing on an errand pass in front of the UPEI net and notching the final goal of the game.
Evan Couturier (Lower Coverdale, NB) made 11 saves for the Panthers while Samuel Diltz (Newmarket, ON) had two while earning the clean sheet for STFX.
Logan Rieck's two-goal performance earned him player of the game for the home squad, while goalkeeper Evan Couturier took home the same honours for the visiting Panthers.
The X-Men are set to host Memorial on Sunday, October 15. The UPEI Panthers are also on the pitch October 15 with a road game against Saint Mary's.
