X-Men battle Capers in AUS soccer action
A second-half header by defender Ryan Ashlee off a corner kick from Randy Ribeiro helped the StFX X-Men secure a 1-1 tie with the Cape Breton University Capers in AUS soccer action Sunday evening in Antigonish.

Both teams battled heavy rain and strong wind during the match at Oland Stadium.

Ashlee, on his first touch of the match after being inserted by X-Men head coach Graham Kennedy, knotted the score in the 62nd minute.

From there, the blue and white had several chances to take the lead, but they could not get another goal by Capers’ keeper Ethan MacInnis.

Andrew MacDonald, in his return to the line-up after a chest injury, allowed only one goal – an own goal that deflected in off a StFX defender on a shot by third-year Capers froward Bruno Mota in the 35th minute. Mota also earned player of the game honro for Cape Breton.

MacDonald made a couple of spectacular saves from close range in holding the Capers to one goal.

The X-Men thought they had the winning goal late in the game when Martin Vlk beat MacInnis after connecting on a nice cross from Mitchell George, but he was called for offside.

Fifth-year defender Ryan Casey received player of the game for the X-Men.

With the tie, the X-Men and the Capers both have 2-3-2 records. The X-Men will be off for the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend, and return to action Saturday, October 13, when they host the Saint Mary’s Huskies. Game time is 3:15 p.m. at Oland Stadium.
