X-Men split games on the road

The X-Men soccer team hit the road this weekend and came home with a win and a loss. Friday night in Sackville, NB StFX beat Mount Allison 2-1, then followed up with a 2-1 loss to UPEI Saturday evening in Charlottetown.

The Panthers came from behind to pull out the victory as the X-Men held a 1-0 after Randy Ribeiro scored for X late in the first half in the 45th minute.

The one goal lead held until the final ten minutes of the game when Harminder Singh and Ibrahima Sanoh scored back-to-back goals for the Panthers in the 82nd and 83rd minutes, respectively to take the win away from the visiting X-Men.

The Panthers outshot the X-Men 17-14 in the game as Trevor White earned the win in nets for UPEI with four saves. Sam Hutchinson (4 saves) took the loss for the X-Men.

Friday evening, the X-Men faired better with a 2-1 victory over Mount Allison. Freshman Michael Al-Assadi scored early in the game for StFX, firing home a goal in the seventh minute, although the lead wouldn’t last long as Patrick Burtt replied for the Mounties in the 11th minute to tie the game.

Ribeiro completed the first half scoring with StFX’s second goal in the 18th minute to give them the 2-1 advantage, and the lead would stick for the remainder of the game.

Hutchinson took home the win in nets for the X-Men, with 9 saves as the X-Men were outshot 19-13. Jonas Hammar (5 saves) took the loss for the Mounties, who remain winless on the AUS season.

The X-Men currently sit in the middle of the AUS pack with a 2-2-1 record and will host two games on Homecoming weekend at StFX Oland Stadium. Friday night, Sept. 28th, the UNB Varsity Reds (1-2-1) will be in town for a 7:15 pm kickoff, followed by a Sunday evening match against the Cape Breton Capers (2-1-1) at 6:15 pm.
