Axemen knock off X-Men with decisive victory

WOLFVILLE, NS The Acadia Axemen shot an impressive 61.1 per cent from the floor en route to a massive 113-79 victory over the first place STFX X-Men on Friday night in front of 723 fans at Stu Aberdeen Court.

Glen Cox (Scotsburn, NS) led Acadia over the U SPORTS No. 5 ranked X-Men with 29 points, which now puts him just 0.1 off leading the nation in scoring. He is now averaging 27.5 points per game, behind Dieogo Maffia's 27.6 points per game.

And while Cox's 29 was impressive, it was player of the game Gabe Davignon's (Whites Lake, NS) 23 points that shined. He was 8-for-10 from the floor, which included 7-for-9 from three. That also featured a three at halftime with just one second on the clock to put the Axemen up 55-38.

Brothers Ryan and Kyle Munro (Timberlea, NS) finished with 16 and 15 points, which included a combined 7-for-14 from three. Kyle was one assist off a double-double with a game-high nine assists, while starter Thomas MacDonald (Rothesay, NB) shot a perfect 5-for-5 for 10 points.

For STFX, all five starters finished in double digits, with Gatluak James (Windsor, ON) leading with 19 points. He also finished tied with MacDonald with a game-high eight assists.

STFX's second best scorer on the night was Bennett Grumbach (Toronto, ON) with 17 points.

The X-Men were playing with a depleted lineup due to several key injuries and had only four athlete available off the bench.

The X-Men continue to lead the AUS standings in first place with 14 points, while Acadia, UPEI, Dalhousie, Cape Breton and Memorial all have 12 points.

Next up for Acadia they Dalhousie (6-6) in a home-and-home weekend, while STFX hosts UPEI on Saturday and Sunday.
