X-Men edge Capers in consolation game

Led by sophomore guard Jordan Tyrrell, the StFX X-Men defeated the rival Cape Breton University Capers 68-60 Saturday evening at Oland Centre.

It was the consolation game of the annual StFX Invitational pre-season tournament, presented by Pizza Delight.

The X-Men outscored the Capers 35-25 in the second half to secure the victory.

Tyrell scored 19 points, adding eight steals, four rebounds and two assists.

Freshman Julius Antoine, with 16, and Rodrigo Madera (12) also scored in double figures for the X-Men.

Antoine and Alex Arthur led the blue and white with eight rebounds, while Madera added seven.

First-year X-Men guard Jameel Williamson chipped in six thefts, as part of a 19-steal effort for a tough X-Men defense.

Cedric Kasongo and Seth Amoah led the Capers with 16 and 14 points, respectively.

In semi-final action Friday night, the Dalhousie Tigers defeated the X-Men 69-49.

Fifth-year senior Jordan Clarke led the X-Men with 10 points, while Antoine, Madera, Tyrrell and Williamson added six apiece in the losing effort.

Freshman Cameron Walker had a strong effort with five points, eight rebounds (team high) and two steals.

Clarke and Tyrrell had three assists apiece for the X-Men.

Jarred Reid led the Tigers with 19 points, while Ritchie Kanza Mata and Kashrell Lawrence added 11 each.

In the opening game of the StFX Invitational, the Saint Mary's Huskies won 79-73 over the Capers, then on Saturday night, the Huskies went on to defeat the Tigers 82-62 to claim the tournament title.

Boyd Vassell from Saint Mary's was named tournament MVP.

Tournament all-stars were Cape Breton's Cedric Kassongo, StFX's Jordan Tyrrell and Rodrigo Madera, Dalhousie's Ritchie Kanza Mata and Saint Mary's Marquis Clayton.

The X-Men will return to action this weekend when they participate in the Cape Breton University pre-season tournament in Sydney.

The X-Men open the regular season Wednesday, Nov. 6, when they host the Capers at Oland Centre. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
