X-Men remain unbeaten with two wins over V-Reds
The CIS ranked No. 2 X-Men basketball team improved to 7-0 on the season with a pair of weekend wins over the UNB Varsity Reds. Saturday the X-Men won 87-68 over the V-Reds, while Friday evening’s contest was 92-59 in favor of the blue and white.
Today’s win marked the 800th career victory for X-Men head coach Steve Konchalski, an impressive milestone for already the winningest coach in CIS history. To read more on Coach K’s 800 win milestone, click here.
In Saturday’s win, the X-Men were led by Terry Thomas who scored 21 points and had 9 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Player of the Game Tyrell Vernon scored 13 points and added 7 assists, while Jeremy Dunn scored 16.
The X-Men held leads of 20-13 after the first quarter and 38-27 at half-time. The Varsity Reds pulled to within four points of the league-leading X-Men in the third quarter, but StFX quickly pulled away and built their ten point lead back up, a lead which they held for the remainder of the game.
Marquis Clayton and Will Donkoh were also in the double scoring digits for StFX with 14 and 10 points, respectively, while Alex DesRoches was the high scorer for UNB with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Matthew Daley added 18 for the V-Reds.
In Friday night’s 92-59 affair, Player of the Game Marquis Clayton scored 18 points for the X-Men, who jumped out to a quick 24-6 lead after the first quarter. The lead increased to 42-24 at half-time and they blue and white ran away with the victory.
Thomas scored 14 points and had 6 rebounds, while Dunn scored 13 and Tyrell Vernon added 10. DesRoches was again the high scorer for UNB with 16 points and 7 rebounds.
Next on the schedule for the undefeated X-Men is a trip to Sydney, NS for a game against the Cape Breton Capers on Wednesday, Jan. 11th.
