BLACKBERRY - CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#23)
No. 1 Saskatchewan, Carleton impressive in hoops playoff debut

March 1, 2011

OTTAWA (CIS) – The University of Saskatchewan women and Carleton University men top the final CIS basketball rankings of the 2010-11 season.

In other CIS sports, Calgary leads the final rankings in swimming after successfully defending both national team titles last weekend, while UNB (men’s hockey) and Windsor (women’s & men’s track and field) also maintain their No. 1 status.

In women’s basketball, the Huskies, who opened the campaign at No. 6 back in early November, topped the final eight coaches’ polls of the season (out of 14).

After taking first place in Canada West with an impressive 22-2 conference mark, Saskatchewan kicked off the playoffs last weekend with a two-game sweep of Calgary, 76-68 and 75-64. The Huskies will now host the CWUAA Final Four starting Friday with a semifinal matchup against Fraser Valley.

In men’s hoops, the Ravens were ranked No. 1 from day one and then proved their worth by posting an unblemished 22-0 record in conference play.

Carleton made quick work of Ryerson last Saturday in their post-season debut, qualifying for the OUA Final Four with a 97-73 OUA East semifinal. The Ravens face Wilfrid Laurier Friday evening in Hamilton with the winners advancing to the Wilson Cup final.
