BLACKBERRY - CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#20)
No. 1 Laval once again perfect in men’s volleyball

Feb. 8, 2011

OTTAWA (CIS) – The Laval University Rouge et Or sit atop the CIS men’s volleyball Top 10 for the sixth straight week after going undefeated in Quebec conference play for the third consecutive season.

In other CIS sports, Saskatchewan (women’s basketball), Carleton (men’s basketball), McGill (women’s hockey), UNB (men’s hockey), UBC (women’s volleyball), Calgary (women’s & men’s swimming) and Windsor (men’s track and field) all hold on to the top of the national rankings this week, while Guelph climbs back to No. 1 ahead of Calgary in women’s track and field.

In men’s volleyball, Laval swept Sherbrooke in straight sets last Friday to finish the regular schedule with an unblemished 17-0 record. The Rouge et Or are currently riding a 61-game winning streak in conference play and Quebec playoff action dating back to the 2007-08 campaign (including interlock play versus the AUS).

Laval enjoys a bye in the RSEQ semifinals and will face either Sherbrooke or Montreal in the best-of-three Quebec final starting on Feb. 18. The Rouge et Or are already qualified for the CIS championship to be hosted by Trinity Western in Langley, B.C., from March 4 to 6.

The men’s volleyball regular season comes to an end this weekend in the three other CIS conferences.

In Canada West, first place will be on the line when the No. 2 Alberta Golden Bears (15-1) travel to Calgary for a Friday-Saturday doubleheader against the reigning CIS champion and third-ranked Dinos (16-0).

In the OUA, the No. 6 Western Ontario Mustangs (17-2) hold a four-point lead over the No. 8 Queen’s Gaels (15-3) going into the final weekend. Western has one game left while Queen’s has a pair.

In the AUS, first place will also be decided on the final weekend as Dalhousie (10-5) makes its way to Fredericton for a two-game series against UNB (9-6).
