Varsity Reds knock off X-Men

The St. Francis Xavier X-Men owned the UNB Varsity Reds in AUS men’s basketball for years until Sunday.

The Varsity Reds had six players hit for double figures in a 94-82 stunner in Fredericton.

The X-Men had won 23 straight in the series since 2004 alone until a 32-17 third quarter gave the Varsity Reds a 74-63 lead.

Alex DesRoches had 19 and William McFee and Dustin Anthony 15 each for the Varsity Reds, 6-7. Andrew Wright had 12 points and 15 assists.

Christian Upshaw had 25 and Jeremy Dunn 13 for St. F.X., 10-4.

Tigers 96, Sea-Hawks 55: At Dalplex, Dalhousie got 18 from Simon Farine and Stephen Lopez in a second straight home rout of Memorial.

Peter Leighton added 15 for the Tigers, 8-5.

Lower Sackville’s Robbie Habib had 23 for the Sea-Hawks.

Capers 78, Panthers 69: At Charlottetown, Jimmy Dorsey had 21 as Cape Breton continued its drive for the No. 1 playoff seed.

Al Alilovic had 13, Tremaine Fraser 11 and Phillip Nkrumah and Scott Jaspers-Fayer 10 each.

The Capers, already clinched for the conference tournament, are 14-1.

Jonathan Cooper had 22 for UPEI, 4-10.

In women’s play, it was:

Capers 83, Panthers 69: At Charlottetown, Denisha Haywood had 13 points and 10 boards for Cape Breton, 12-3 and winners of six in a row.

Nakita Newman had 20 and Amy Gough 16 for UPEI, 0-14.

Sea-Hawks 88, Tigers 53: At Dalplex, Alexandria Forsey had 20, Robyn O’Rielly 15, Brittany Dalton 14 and Grace Fishbein 12 for Memorial, up 32-12 after 10 minutes. The Sea-Hawks are 8-6.

Tia Gerwatowski had 16 and Patricia McNeil 15 for Dal, 4-9.

Varsity Reds 69, X-Women 55: At Fredericton, UNB rallied a day after losing in double overtime to St. F.X.

Claire Colborne had 21, Amanda Sharpe 17 and Leah Corby 15 for the Varisty Reds. Ashley Stephen had 12 points for the X-Women, 9-5.
