BLACKBERRY - CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#17)
TWU new No. 1 in women’s volleyball

Jan. 18, 2010

OTTAWA (CIS) – For the first time in school history, the Trinity Western University Spartans are the number one ranked team in Canadian Interuniversity Sport women’s volleyball.

The Spartans, who went winless in their first CIS season back in 1999-2000, had been ranked second in the last four national coaches’ polls leading up to this week. They overtake the three-time defending CIS champion UBC Thunderbirds, who drop one spot in the new rankings and are now tied with Laval at No. 2.

In other CIS sports, Saskatchewan (women’s basketball), Carleton (men’s basketball), McGill (women’s hockey), UNB (men’s hockey), Laval (men’s volleyball) and Calgary (women’s & men’s swimming) all hold on to their No. 1 rankings, while Guelph and Windsor are new national leaders in women’s and men’s track and field, respectively.

Women’s volleyball

The top-ranked Spartans (9-1) enjoyed a bye in the Canada West schedule last weekend and will be back on the court on Friday night for the first of two home games versus the No. 7 Calgary Dinos (6-4). Trinity Western is currently tied atop the conference standings with No. 2 UBC (9-3) but has two games in hand.

The reigning CIS champion Thunderbirds, who had topped the last three weekly polls, drop one position after splitting a doubleheader at home against the Dinos. UBC won the series opener in five sets on Friday but lost the rematch on Saturday, also in five games.

Men’s volleyball

In their first regular season match since the December break, the No. 1 Laval Rouge et Or easily improved to 11-0 in Quebec conference action last Friday with a straight-set win at Montreal (3-9).

Women’s basketball

Saskatchewan (12-2) was dominant in its first weekend as the top-ranked team in the country. The Huskies travelled to Winnipeg and returned with a pair of victories over Manitoba (3-11), 82-67 and 82-68.

Men’s basketball

No. 1 Carleton (14-0) remained the only undefeated team in the country last weekend with a pair of wins in Kingston. The Ravens defeated Queen’s (2-11) 86-73 before downing RMC (0-13) by 121-40.

Women’s hockey

No. 1 McGill (12-0) had a bye in the RSEQ schedule last weekend. The Martlets return to the ice Sunday for a home tilt against cross-town rival Montreal (6-6-2).

Men’s hockey

UNB remains at No. 1, McGill up to No. 2

OTTAWA (CIS) – The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds are the number one team in Canadian Interuniversity Sport men’s hockey for the second straight week.

The V-Reds (15-4-0) received 13 of 16 first-place votes and a total of 171 points from the national media panel to remain ahead of the McGill Redmen and the Alberta Golden Bears. The three teams have made up the Top Three in each of the 10 weekly polls so far this season.

The Redmen (19-0-2) earned the remaining first-place nods and 138 points in the new rankings to move past Alberta at No. 2. The Bears (13-3-2), who had topped the first eight polls of the campaign before dropping to second place last week, fall to a season-low No. 3 after receiving 126 points from the panel.

Rounding up the new national rankings are the Western Ontario Mustangs (16-1-3), up one position to No. 4; the reigning University Cup champion Saint Mary’s Huskies (13-5-1), down one spot to No. 5; the Saskatchewan Huskies (11-7-0), up one to No. 6; the UPEI Panthers (10-6-3), down one to No. 7; the Manitoba Bisons (8-4-4), up one to No. 8; the St. Francis Xavier X-Men (11-7-1), who were unranked last week; and the Lakehead Thunderwolves (13-6-1), down two positions to No. 10.

Top-ranked UNB extended its conference winning streak to five games and its lead atop the AUS standings to three points last weekend with a 7-4 win at Moncton (6-11-2) and a close-fought 2-1 overtime decision over No. 7 UPEI, in Fredericton.

The Varsity Reds face one of their toughest challenges of the season this week as they host a pair of Top-10 opponents, Saint Mary’s on Friday and StFX on Saturday.

No. 2 McGill remained the only undefeated team in the country – in conference play – last Friday with a 5-4 home win over Carleton (12-6-2). The OUA-leading Redmen host Carleton again on Wednesday and archrival UQTR (14-6-0) on Friday.

No. 3 Alberta struggled in Lethbridge last weekend against the 7-6-4 Pronghorns. The Golden Bears erased a 5-2 deficit on Friday to prevail 9-8 in overtime, before dropping a 4-2 decision on Saturday. They play a home-and-home series against Calgary (9-6-2) this weekend.
