X-Men bring down the Axe

The X-Men basketball team had a home-and-home series with the Acadia Axemen and came out on the winning end of both games as they won 78-68 Friday night in Wolfville and 97-80 Sunday afternoon at the StFX Oland Centre.

Friday night the X-Men were down 49-43 at half-time to the host Axemen but Acadia struggled in the second half, hitting only 4 for 29 from field goal range. The X-Men outscored the Axemen 18-7 in the third quarter and 17-12 in the fourth to take the lead and earn the ten-point victory.

Tyler Richards led StFX with 20 points and 8 rebounds, while Terrance Taylor scored 16. Player of the Game Will Silver had a triple-double for the X-Men, scoring 14 points and adding 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Alberto Rodriguez was in double-double figures with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Justin Boutilier led Acadia with a game high 28 points while Casey Fox contributed 16 points.

\r\n

On Sunday afternoon in Antigonish, six X-Men hit double figures on the score sheet en route to a 97-80 win. Tyler Richards again led the StFX attack, scoring 23 points and contributing 7 assists and 3 steals.

\r\n

Chad Warren scored 14 points for X, including 3 for 4 from 3-point range. T-Bear Upshaw and Jeremy Dunn each scored 13 points a piece and Dwayne Johnson and Will Silver scored had 11 each.

Alex Traikov led Acadia with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Justin Boutilier scored 17 points and Casey Fox had 13.

\r\n

The X-Men led 28-21 after the first quarter and 57-43 at the half and continued to dominate the play throughout the second half for the win.

\r\n

With the two wins, StFX betters their record to 13-2 atop the AUS conference and currently hold a four-point lead over second place Cape Breton. They travel to Fredericton this weekend for two games against last place UNB (3-13).
