Hoop X-Men increase lead atop AUS

The X-Men basketball team increased their lead atop the AUS conference with two key four-point victories over the Memorial Seahawks in Newfoundland this past weekend. Friday night the X-Men posted a 71-60 win, while on Sunday they topped the Seahawks by a convincing 94-68 margin.

In the first game, X-Man Tyler Richards played a strong game for X, scoring 25 points and contributing 3 assists. Dwayne Johnson scored 13 points and had 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals while Christian T-Bear Upshaw scored 10 points and had 4 assists.

Christian Somerton led the Seahawks with 14 points and 16 rebounds while Jason Shepherd scored 12 points.

\r\n

Although the X-Men were down 16-9 after the first quarter, they came back to outscore the Seahawks 22-13 in the second frame to establish a close 31-29 lead at half-time. In the low-scoring third quarter the X-Men owned a 14-9 scoring edge and they held onto their lead throughout the fourth for the 71-60 win.

On Sunday afternoon, the X-Men enjoyed a ten-point 46-36 lead at half-time en route to a 94-68 win, their second of the weekend.

Tyler Richards again led the X attack with 20 points, and added 5 rebounds and 7 assists. T-Bear Upshaw scored 19 points in the game and Dwayne Johnson posted 12 points and had 4 rebounds. Alberto Rodriguez had 8 points and 11 rebounds for the blue and white.

Jason Shepherd scored 20 points for Memorial and had 5 assists and 3 steals.

\r\n

With the victories, the X-Men earned an important 8 points and increased their first place conference lead by the same margin as they now hold a 9-1 record with 28 points. Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s are tied for second place with 20 points a piece. StFX will host the 7-3 Huskies on Sunday afternoon in a 3 pm match-up at the StFX Oland Centre.
