Mounties lose 29-9 game to X-Men in final game of the season on Alumni Field
SACKVILLE, NB - The Mount Allison Mounties lost a 29-9 game to the STFX X-Men in their final game of the season on Alumni Field.
Mount Allison took an early 3-0 lead thanks to a rouge on the opening kickoff followed by a STFX safety shortly after.
The X-Men responded later in the first quarter however, as a five-play, 77-yard drive was capped off with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Silas Fagnan to Caleb Tremblay to put the visitors ahead 7-3.
The X-Men would add a 32-yard field goal from Ben Hadley before the quarter was out to lead by a touchdown, 10-3, at the end of the first.
The respective kickers were the story of the second quarter as STFX's Hadley and Beynon McKeen of Mount Allison both converted on two field goals each – Hadley from 25 and 27 and McKeen from 19 and 31 – to keep it a one-score game heading into the break, with STFX ahead 16-9.
STFX found the endzone first as Antonio Corsi caught a one-yard pass from Fagnan to extend the visitors lead to 23-9 with just over four minutes to play in the third quarter.
Fagnan would end the game 23-36 with 193 total passing yards, bringing him to 7129 career passing yards. This mark sits him in third place overall in AUS career passing and sets a new STFX record, previously held by Tivon Cook at 6943.
Hadley added another field goal before the quarter was out as the X-Men broke the score open to 26-7 at the end of three quarters.
The final quarter saw a 20-yard field goal from Hadley within the three minute warning as the final points of the game and STFX took this one by a score of 29-7.
With Hadley's second field goal, he became the all-time STFX career leader in field goals made, surpassing the previous record held by Jadran Mlinarevic with 56. Hadley now sits at 60 career field goals, third best in the AUS record book.
The X-Men (4-3) conclude the AUS regular season at home against the Saint Mary's Huskies on Saturday, October 26th with kick-off set for 2:00pm.
Mount Allison (1-6) head to Lennoxville, Que. for their final game of the season, facing Bishop's for a 7:00pm kick-off on Friday, October 25th.
