X-Men power past Axemen with strong fourth quarter

WOLFVILLE, NS – The STFX X-Men walked away with a 23-6 victory over the Acadia Axemen on Saturday afternoon, but the final score did not tell the tale of the game.

STFX led by a narrow 9-6 margin after three quarters, while Acadia led 6-4 at the half.

It was a strong 14-point fourth quarter with touchdowns by Silas Fagnan and Ben Harrington that pulled the X-Men away en route to their second victory to keep them as the only undefeated team early in the AUS season.

Fagnan was 18-for-28 with 268 yards, matched closely by Acadia's quarterback Riley Naujoks who finished the day 22-for-30 with 283 yards.

In the air Zakariya Karim led the game with 94 yards for STFX. Malcolm Bussey led on the ground with 99 yards, with an average carry of 5.5 yards. He also finished with 72 receiving yards.

Acadia's offence was balanced in the air with Brady Newcomb leading the way with 55 yards. Chad Alexander, Jack Tocher and Brayden Robinson all had over 40 receiving yards apiece.

Ben Hadley was 2-for-3 with a 32-yard field goal as his longest on the day. He also added an extra point and rouge point for a total of eight.

Acadia's Michael Adams was 2-for-2 with a total of six points.

STFX (2-0) is next in action on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Mount Allison (0-1), while Acadia (1-1) continues at home when they host Saint Mary's (0-1) on Friday, Sept. 8 at Raymond Field.
