Martin, Hadley & Turnsek named to U SPORTS East West Bowl roster

StFX X-Men defensive backs Brandyn Martin and Jay Turnsek and kicker/punter Ben Hadley have been named to the U SPORTS East West Bowl roster for the upcoming game in Hamilton that showcases the top football athletes eligible for the 2024 CFL draft.

Brandyn Martin is a 6'0, 204-pound defensive back from Melfort, Sask. who wrapped up his third year of eligibility with the X-Men this past season. The first year Education student and previous Human Kinetics grad was named an AUS all-star for the first time in his career after the 2022 season. Martin was ninth overall in AUS tackling with 32 on the season, including 29 solo tackles. He averaged 4.0 tackles/game, had 2.5 tackles for a loss and a forced fumble this year. A co-captain with the X-Men, Brandyn is also a two-time academic all-Canadian, having earned the distinction in 2020-21 and 2021-22.

Ben Hadley is a 6'2, 193-pound kicker/punter in his third year of eligibility with the X-Men special teams unit. A third year business student from Halifax, N.S., he earned AUS all-star status this fall and was named the X-Men special teams player of the year. Hadley was second in the conference in total points scored with 60 and led the AUS in kicking. He was 11 for 15 in field goals made for a 73% kicking percentage and scored 21 extra points. He also had eight punts for 290 yards this season for a 36.3 average yards/punt.

Jay Turnsek is a 5'10, 198-pound defensive back in his third year of eligibility, starting in all eight games for the AUS champion X-Men this past season. A fourth year Science student from North Bay, Ont., Turnsek had 16.5 tackles on the year, including 12 solo tackles and averaging 2.1 tackles/game. He recorded one sack, one interception and one break-up in 2022 on the X-Men defense that led the nation in defense, allowing only 10.4 defensive points/game. Turnsek was the 2019 X-Men football rookie of the year and is a three-time academic all-Canadian. He was the recipient of the STFX Athletics 2019-20 Athletic Director's Award for Academic Achievement.

Rosters announced for 2023 East-West Bowl

RICHMOND HILL, Ont. (U SPORTS) - The table is set for the 2023 East-West Bowl, U SPORTS announced on Tuesday the official rosters for Canadian universities' top football showcase.

The 2023 U SPORTS football prospects game is set for Saturday, May 13 at 1 p.m. ET at McMaster University's Ron Joyce Field in Hamilton.

This is the second straight year that the event has been at McMaster (and the third time overall), and this year marks the 20th anniversary of the annual all-star contest, which was launched in 2003.

The East-West Bowl showcases – for the most part – players who will be eligible for the following year's CFL draft.

The East side is comprised primarily of student-athletes representing schools from the AUS and RSEQ conferences, as well as Carleton, Ottawa, Queen's, and York. The West contingent is primarily made up of players from Canada West and the remaining OUA universities. Note that some adjustments have been made to balance out the two sides.

The West prevailed in last year's game 11-8, to stretch their lead in the series to 12-6 overall. The West has won the past five games, with the last win by the East in 2015.

The two teams' coaching staffs will be announced, along with any updates to the team rosters, on Friday, May 12.
