X-Men football defensive coordinator Bob Mullen accepts position with U of T

Antigonish, NS - X-Men football Defensive Coordinator Bob Mullen will be moving on from the X-Men program as he has recently accepted a new coaching opportunity as the Defensive Coordinator with the University of Toronto.

Coach Waterman commented, "Bob Mullen is an outstanding football coach and an even better person. He truly is a class act. His ability to build relationships and connect with his players is an impressive thing to witness."

"The move to the University of Toronto is a life decision that will allow him an opportunity to continue to pursue his passion near his family," continues Waterman. "I consider Bob to be a dear friend and wish him well in his new role. I can't thank him enough for the positive impact he has had on our football program."

Mullen coached for the past four seasons with the two-time defending AUS champion X-Men acting as Defensive Coordinator and also coaching the defensive backs. Known for his strong work ethic and intense commitment to preparation, he is recognized as one of the top defensive coaches in the CIS.

Mullen coached an X-Men defense that in 2016 allowed only 16.1 points/game and 129 points overall, good for fifth overall in the nation. The X-Men were fourth in U SPORTS in yards/game (336.0), tied for second overall in interceptions (16), were sixth in sacks (24) and scored two touchdowns. In 2015, en route to their first AUS championship title since 1996, the X-Men defence gave up only one touchdown in their final five games versus AUS opponents.

Coach Mullen is grateful for his time at StFX commenting, "I would like to thank Director of Athletics and Recreation Leo MacPherson and Coach Waterman for the opportunity of a lifetime. Over the past four years I have come to know and love the special place called Antigonish, the outstanding institution that is St. Francis Xavier University, and most importantly the absolutely wonderful people that make up the X-Men family. I will remain forever thankful."

"The successes we shared and the challenges we faced together forged a bond that time will not weaken. To the young men who so proudly wear the white and blue, thank you for your trust, patience, confidence and love. I wish you all continued success on the field and, most importantly, in life. Go X Go!"

A Vanier Cup winner as both a player and a coach at Queen's University, Mullen is a proven winner with over 40 years of football experience. He served as the Gaels defensive coordinator from 1988-00, helping the team to four Yates Cups titles and the only shutout in Vanier Cup history in 1992. In 2011 he was recognized as OVFL Coach of the Year. He will begin his defensive coordinator position in Toronto this month.
