Bio

Jane Hanley pioneered the development of women’s sports at a time when intercollegiate sport expanded in Atlantic Canada. A gifted basketball player herself, Jane coached the Mount Saint Bernard College women’s basketball team (an affiliate of StFX) from 1964 to 1968. Playing under the new international rules for the first time - something Jane herself was instrumental in orchestrating - the 1964-65 season was pivotal in the development of women’s sport. Jane shared her passion for women’s sport by coaching the varsity field hockey team, as well as high school volleyball and badminton. Generous with her time, Jane refereed various sports as well. In 1965, Jane became the first Director of Women’s Sport at Mount Saint Bernard in addition to her coaching duties. Jane was skillful, patient, and inspiring for all she worked with in her extensive roles as a coach, referee, and administrator in the development of women’s sport not only at StFX but also in Atlantic Canada.
