Connor McGuire of the CIS No. 8-ranked StFX X-Men cross country team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 28, 2012.

Connor, a fourth-year science student from Summerside, P.E.I., claimed the men’s individual title for the second year in a row at the 2012 Subway AUS cross country championship this past weekend in Halifax, claiming the gold medal in Saturday's 10-kilometre race with a time of 32.22.

McGuire, who finished two seconds ahead of Dalhousie’s Matt McNeil, led the defending AUS champion X-Men to their fifth Atlantic conference banner in the past seven years.

At the post-race championship banquet, Connor was named an AUS all-star, the AUS men’s cross country athlete of the year for the second consecutive season and also received the AUS student-athlete community service award.
In addition to the AUS championship victory, McGuire also won both the Moncton and StFX invitational meets this year and finished third overall at the UNB/STU interlock meet.

Frida Aspnaes of the UNB Varsity Reds women’s cross country team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 28, 2012.

At the 2012 Subway AUS cross country championship meet hosted by Dalhousie University this past weekend, Frida claimed the gold medal in the women’s individual race, crossing the finish line in the five-kilometre event in 17:56, eight seconds ahead of second place runner Holly Van Gestel of Dalhousie.

Aspnaes, who won all four races she participated in this season, was also named an AUS all-star and honoured as the 2012 AUS women’s cross country athlete of the year.

Her performance led the Varsity Reds to a third place finish in the team competition. Frida will now head to the CIS championship in London, Ont., hosted by Western University on Saturday, November 10th.
