Gerych CIS Athlete of the Week for 2nd time

Toronto’s Brown, StFX’s Gerych honoured

OTTAWA (CIS) – Cross country runners Megan Brown of Toronto and David Gerych of St. Francis Xavier are the Canadian University Sport Mitsubishi female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 26, 2008.

Brown, a fourth-year student claimed the individual gold medal at the OUA cross country championship Saturday in Kingston, Ont., finishing the five-kilometre race in a time of 17 minutes and 26 seconds. The Guelph, Ont., native, who won the CIS individual title in 2006 and was named CIS rookie of the year in 2004, crossed the finish line 34 seconds ahead of defending CIS and OUA champion Lindsay Carson of the Guelph Gryphons.

Cross country runners Gina Stewart of StFX and Catherine Cormier of Laval, as well as Regina volleyball player Beth Clark were also nominated for the women’s award.

Gerych, a fourth-year exchange student from Louny, Czech Republic, is named CIS male athlete of the week of the second time in three weeks after he captured the individual title at the AUS championship in Moncton with a time of 33:17.10 over 10 kilometres. The 2007 CIS bronze medalist finished 27 seconds ahead of teammate Petr Doubravsky and helped the X-Men claim the team banner.

Cross country runners James Poulin Cadovius of Sherbrooke and Allen Brett of Guelph, as well as Simon Fraser basketball player Greg Wallis were the other male nominees.
