Antigonish, NS – Reigning AUS most valuable player Ally Rowe scored all three Cape Breton goals as the U SPORTS No. 5 ranked Capers defeated the STFX X-Women 3-1 on Wednesday night at STFX Stadium.
With the win the Capers remain undefeated on the season with an 8-0-2 record. The X-Women drop to 4-4-2.
X-Women midfielder Meghan Cole (Moncton, NB) opened the scoring in the game as she tallied on the first X shot of the game. She picked up on a turnover deep in the Capers end and struck a high shot past Ellie Lancaster (Fall River, NS).
The Capers replied four minutes later as AUS leading scorer Ally Rowe (Kitchener, ON) knocked in a rebound after X-Women keeper Christina Gentile (Laval, QC) got an initial hand on the CBU shot.
Rowe's goal was the 73rd of her AUS career, as she became the all-time career scoring leader in both women's and men's AUS soccer.
Cole almost scored for a second time in the 22nd minute on a shot in close but Lancaster got a hand on the ball, making a big save.
Lauren Rowe (Conception Bay South, NL) nearly connected with Ally Rowe late in the half as she sent a low cross in front of the X goal but an X-Women defender cleared.
Katelyn Wilton (Bedford, NS) was dangerous for the Capers on corner kicks but the first half closed out with the teams remaining deadlocked at 1-1.
Early in the second half Makenna Bowser (Bible Hill, NS) delivered a solid shot on the STFX goal from about 25 yards out off a free kick but Gentile punched the ball away with the save in the X goal.
Four minutes later Brynn Jurus (Ancaster, ON) had a scoring chance for STFX but sailed a high shot over the Capers goal.
Rowe scored her second goal of the game in the 63rd minute off a nice volley shot to give CBU a 2-1 lead.
Cole almost answered for STFX a minute later but her shot from 20 yards out went high of the Capers net.
The X-Women were pressuring to tie the game. Ava Elgood (Almonte, ON) had a chance on a headed ball from a Cheyenne Bower (London, ON) pass but the ball went just high of the net.
Rowe's third goal came in the 85th minute as she headed in the ball off a Madalyn Hatfield (Dartmouth, NS) corner kick. For her three-goal effort she garnered player of the game status for her team.
STFX midfielder Cheyenne Bower was the Gabriel Pizza STFX player of the game.
