X-Women draw even with Sea-Hawks
The X-Women played to a 1-1 tie with the visiting Memorial Sea-Hawks on Sunday afternoon
ANTIGONISH, NS - The STFX X-Women played to a 1-1 tie with the visiting Memorial Sea-Hawks on Sunday afternoon at STFX Stadium.
The X-Women carried much of the possession late in the first half, forcing Sea-Hawks keeper Leana Claude (Grenchen, SUI) to make a couple of stops to keep the score even. With four minutes to go in the half, Claude had to come off the line to put hands on a dangerous through ball and was able to keep it under control.
Shots on goal at the end of the half were 4-0 in favor of STFX as the teams played to a scoreless opening half.
STFX netminder Christina Gentile (Laval, QC) had to come off her line to clear a Sea-Hawks chance a few minutes into the second half. Eight minutes in though, Sea-Hawks forward Zoe Rowe (Conception Bay South, NL) broke in off a well place through ball from Grace Nolan (Conception Bay South, NL), and calmly placed the ball in the bottom corner.
A few minutes later, a Sea-Hawks strike from distance rattled the crossbar but STFX was able to clear. From there, the X-Women pressured to tie the game, but the Sea-Hawks kept their composure and the teams continued to go back and forth.
STFX drew even off a corner kick in the 70th minute, with Caitlin Chrichton (Ottawa, ON) getting the last foot to a ball in the box, with Ashlee Delaney (Ottawa, ON) getting the assist. The home team came close to breaking the deadlock five minutes later, but a block from Memorial defender Sarah Jones kept the game even.
A STFX freekick just outside the Memorial 18-yard-box spelled trouble with under two minutes to go, but the bouncing ball stayed out, and the game finished in a 1-1 draw.
Gentile had two stops while Memorial player of the game Claude made five. STFX defender Meghan Lineger (Comox, BC) was the Gabriel Pizza player of the game for STFX.
The Sea-Hawks return home next weekend to take on Moncton at 5 p.m. The X-Women are also at home next weekend, when they host the Acadia Axewomen, also at 5 p.m. on Homecoming weekend.
