The X-Women picked up their second win of the season with a 1-0 victory over the visiting Mount Allison Mounties in AUS soccer action Friday evening at STFX Stadium
ANTIGONISH, NS - The STFX X-Women picked up their second win of the season with a 1-0 victory over the visiting Mount Allison Mounties in Atlantic University Sports soccer action on Friday evening at STFX Stadium.
X-Women defender Emma Steen (Stittsville, ON) had the lone goal in the match, capping off a strong evening of play.
STFX controlled the majority of possession in the opening 10 minutes, and generated some scoring chances with three early corner kicks, but the Mounties barred the door.
Lauren Reid (Kanata, ON) had great chance with a header on goal off a Brynn Jurus (Ancaster, ON) pass in the 28th minute but Mounties keeper Katie Cabot (Cochrane, AB) came up with the save.
X-Women continued to gain momentum and kept up the pressure but could not find the back of the net. Mounties striker Victoria Jones (Ajax, ON) was strong up front for the visitors in the opening half but was unable to get any balls through for shots on the STFX goal.
The game remained scoreless to halftime as the X-Women had an 8-0 shot advantage after the first 45 minutes.
Three minutes into the second half Mounties striker Jones had a strong low shot on goal that X keeper Hailey Jones (Ottawa, ON) got a hand on it for a key save.
It was Steen who broke the deadlock in the 61st minute, heading home a corner kick from Cheyenne Bower (London, ON), after Cabot made the initial save.
The X-Women continued to pressure the Mounties back line and maintained consistent possession for much of the rest of the half. The Mounties looked to capitalize on a late corner kick, but Jones speared it away and STFX successfully cleared.
Kenadie Wagg (Halifax, NS) was named player of the game for the Mounties thanks to her work in the midfield, while Caitlin Crichton (Ottawa, ON) received Gabriel Pizza player of the game honours for the X-Women.
Cabot had seven saves on the night, while Jones made two stops while earning the shutout.
The X-Women continue their weekend with a trip to Charlottetown for a match up with the UPEI Panthers on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is 1 p.m. The Mounties take to the field tomorrow in Sydney, to face the Cape Breton University Capers at 4 p.m.
