X-Women soccer struggle on the road

The X-Women soccer team had a tough weekend on the road as they dropped two games in Halifax, losing out 1-0 to Dalhousie on Saturday and 2-0 to Saint Mary’s on Sunday.

As a result, the X-Women dropped to fifth place in the AUS conference. They currently have a 4-4-1 record and 13 points, five back of fourth place Cape Breton. The Tigers and Huskies each have 21 points in a tie for second spot overall. UPEI leads the way with an 8-1-0 record and 24 points as two weekends of regular season play remain.

In Saturday’s game against Dalhousie, the two teams played to a scoreless first half. Tigers defender Rieka Santilli was the only one to find the back of the net as she broke the goose egg in the 50th minute of the game, giving Dalhousie a 1-0 lead which they held on to for the remainder of play.

Tigers goalkeeper Taryn McKenna earned the shutout win while StFX’s Maris Miller was tagged with the loss. Midfielder Joanna Blodgett earned Player of the Game honors for the Tigers, while defender/midfielder Sonia Boucher took home the same honor for the X-Women.

On Sunday afternoon at Huskies Stadium, the X-Women were again held off the score sheet as Saint Mary’s blanked the visitors 2-0.

Kelly Burgess opened the scoring for Saint Mary’s early in the game with a goal in the 11th minute which held through to half-time. An own goal by the X-Women added to the Huskies lead in the second half in the 65th minute.

Justine Caldwell earned the win in nets for the Huskies while Anna Thompson took the loss for the X-Women.
