Soccer X-Women earn split on weekend road trip

The X-Women soccer team had a win and a loss while on the road this past weekend. StFX defeated Mount Allison 4-0 on Saturday and dropped a 1-0 decision to UPEI on Sunday.

Saturday’s game in Sackville, freshman striker Maura Woodman scored three of the four X-Women goals to lead them to victory. Woodman’s first goal came unassisted in the 21st minute of the game. Teammate Olivia Zanette scored StFX’s second goal 12 minutes later, then Woodman tallied again in the 38th and 42nd minutes to establish the 4-0 lead before the first half was complete.

The lead held through the second half and Maris Miller earned the shutout win in nets for the X-Women. Miller had 5 saves as the X-Women outshot the Mounties 17-7.

On Sunday afternoon, the X-Women faced the UPEI Panthers in a battle of undefeated teams. The first half was scoreless and play continued until Andrea Yr Gustavsdottir scored for the Panthers off a pass from Andrea Archibald in the 55th minute.

The X-Women couldn’t mount a comeback and the Panthers held on for the victory. Chanelle Roy earned the shutout win in nets for UPEI while Anna Thompson took the loss for StFX. The Panthers outshot the X-Women 8-3 in the game.

StFX now holds a 3-1-1 record, good enough for 10 points and third spot overall in the AUS conference. The Panthers improved to 5-0-0 on the season and are in first place. Next on the schedule for the X-Women are two games at home for Homecoming weekend. Friday night, Sept. 30th the X-Women will host the second place Dalhousie Tigers (4-1-0) at 5:00 pm, while the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues (0-5-0) will be in town Sunday afternoon for a 1:00 pm game.
