Soccer X-Women defeat Sea-Hawks in home opener

The StFX X-Women defeated the Memorial Sea-Hawks 2-1 in AUS women’s soccer action Sunday afternoon at Oland Stadium.

Striker Jordan Brass scored the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute from a scramble in the Sea-Hawks’ goal crease that came after a corner kick by X-Women winger Melanie Sunada.

The X-Women carried the play in the first 15 minutes of the opening half, garnering several scoring opportunities, including a penalty kick by Meaghan Ramsden. She sailed her attempt wide of Sea-Hawks’ goalkeeper Simone Quinlan.

The X-Women, who upped their early season record to 2-0-1, opened the scoring in the 34th minute on a goal by striker Olivia Zanette. With a left-footed strike, the fourth-year player from Thunder Bay, ON, beat Quinlan, who could only deflect the high shot before it crossed the goal line.

The Sea-Hawks (1-2-1) tied the score early in the second half after a header by forward Heather Williams bobbled around inside the StFX 18-yard box and went into the net off an X-Women player for a Memorial own goal.

Fifth year goalkeeper Anna Thompson recorded the X-Women victory, her second of the season, making one save.

X-Women defender Victoria Penner was the player of the match.

The blue and white outshot the Seahawks 27-3.

The X-Women’s next match is Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. when they face the Mount Allison Mounties (1-2-0) in Sackville, NB. Next Sunday (Sept. 25), they will face the UPEI Panthers (3-0-0) in a 1 p.m. opening kick-off in Charlottetown.
