Soccer X-Women earn first win of season

Stephanie Cameron’s goal in the 50th minute was all the X-Women needed to hold onto a 1-0 shutout victory over the Acadia Axewomen Friday night in Wolfville, NS.

The two teams played to a scoreless first half in windy conditions at Raymond field, then the X-Women used a strong second half to seal their first win of the 2011 AUS season. After holding most of the possession to start the second half, midfielder Cameron scored unassisted at the 50 minute mark, the only ball to get past Acadia netminder Leisha Doyle.

The X-Women continued their strong play for the remainder of the game, and despite a late scoring chance by Acadia, were able to hold on for the 1-0 win. Veteran keeper Anna Thompson earned the win in nets for StFX, who improve to 1-0-1 in two games against the Axewomen to date.

Cameron earned Player of the Game honors for the X-Women. StFX returns to Oland Stadium on Sunday as they host their home opener against the Memorial Seahawks (1-0-1) at 1:00 pm. Sunday’s game is Minor Soccer Day at StFX, all youth aged 16 and under will be admitted free of charge.
