Mitchell named AUS Athlete of the Week

ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY SPORT SUBWAY ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Sarah Mitchell of the AUS Champion StFX X-Women soccer team is the Atlantic University Sport Subway Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending November 8th, 2009. Sarah, a fourth year midfielder and Human Kinetics student from Dartmouth, NS, was named the Keith’s Most Valuable Player of the Championship at this past weekend’s Subway AUS women’s soccer championship hosted by Memorial University. Sarah scored the game-tying goal for the X-Women in their eventual 2-1 (4-2 in penalty kicks) win over the UPEI Panthers in the championship game as the X-Women won three games in three days to claim their first AUS women’s soccer banner since the 1986 season. Mitchell was also a strong force on the field for StFX in their 1-0 quarter-final victory over the Moncton Aigles Bleues and 2-1 semifinal overtime win over the CIS No. 5 ranked Dalhousie Tigers. The X-Women travel to the Toronto this week to compete at the CIS championship hosted by the University of Toronto.

Andrew Rigby of the CIS No. 3 ranked Cape Breton Capers men’s soccer team is the Atlantic University Sport Subway Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending November 8th, 2009. Rigby, a first year player from Nottingham England, who was named a conference all-star and the Atlantic University Sport Player of the Year last week, capped off an impressive week by leading the Capers to the AUS title at this past weekend’s Subway AUS men’s soccer championship hosted by Dalhousie in Halifax, NS. Rigby was named the Keith’s Most Valuable Player of the Championship as the Capers defeated the Moncton Aigles Bleus by a score of 4-3 in semifinal play and in the championship game defeated the UPEI Panthers 2-1 in overtime. Rigby and his Capers team-mates will travel to Langley, BC to compete in this weekend’s CIS championship hosted by Trinity Western University.
