Soccer X-Women remain undefeated

The X-Women soccer team extended their AUS unbeaten streak this weekend and remain the only team with a perfect after two shutout victories on home turf at Oland Stadium. Sunday afternoon the X-Women beat UNB 3-0 while on Saturday they handed the Universite de Moncton a 1-0 loss.

In the 1-0 win over Moncton, X-Women striker Amy MacKinnon scored the lone goal in the game, banging in a loose ball in front of the Moncton crease in the 55th minute. The ball was thrown in from the sideline, and bounced around before MacKinnon finally knocked it in.

“The ladies played well overall, better in the second half,” commented X-Women head coach Trevor Reddick.
 
“We created quite a few chances and probably deserved a couple more goals but I was very pleased with result. Moncton continues to get better every year and they played very well at times, threatening our goal on a couple of occasions.”

The X-Women had several good scoring chances in the first half of the game, led by fifth year veteran striker Eugenia Renderos. StFX held the momentum in the game for most of the opening half. The Aigles Bleues gave more of a challenge in the second half but the X-Women were able to continue their strong play and hold on for the win.

Rachel Dragan earned Subway Player of the Game honors for StFX with a solid effort in midfield, while Karine Day was named Player of the Game for Moncton. Anna Thompson earned the shutout win in nets for the X-Women.

On Sunday the X-Women continued their strong play, coming away with another win as they defeated the UNB Varsity Reds 3-0, recording their fifth consecutive win on the season and fourth shutout. Keeper Anna Thompson has earned all the wins in nets for the X-Women who currently sit atop the AUS conference with 15 points and a perfect 5-0-0 record.

The X-Women and Varsity Reds exchanged chances early on in the game then StFX kept up the pressure throughout the first half and created several scoring opportunities.

\r\n

The CIS ranked No. 7 X-Women kept the pressure on for the second half and second year striker Olivia Zanette converted for two goals just minutes apart to give StFX a 2-0 lead. In the dying minutes of the game Dominique Miles blasted a ball past UNB keeper Melissa Stapleton to increase the X-Women lead to 3-0.

Stapleton earned Player of the Game honors for her play in nets for the Varsity Reds while Zanette was the Subway Player of the Game for the X-Women.

\r\n

The X-Women (3-0-0) will face one of their toughest challenges of the season as they travel to Cape Breton on Friday for a game against the second place Capers (4-1-1), the four-time defending AUS champions. They will then travel to Halifax Sunday to face the fourth place Dalhousie Tigers (2-0-2).
