X-Women earn first win of season

The X-Women soccer team opened the AUS season with a 1-0 win over the visiting Acadia Axewomen Friday afternoon at the StFX soccer pitch.

With approximately 150 fans in attendance on a sunny day, a goal by fourth year X-Women striker Amy MacKinnon (Calgary, AB) at the 18 minute mark was all that was needed for StFX to hold onto to win.

MacKinnon’s goal came off a nice feed by first year defender Meaghan Ramsden (Ottawa, ON). MacKinnon finished the goal from the top of the box, beating the Acadia keeper Stephanie Moignard. The X-Women peppered Moignard with 14 shots in the game.

Sixth year X-Women head coach Trevor Reddick commented, “the girls played really well, I was impressed with their work ethic they put in today. We put Acadia under a lot of pressure, and held Acadia to just a few scoring chances.”

\r\n

“Overall our whole backline played excellent, Nicole Melong played a great game. I like that we have some really good depth to our team this year.”

Nicole Melong (Pickering, ON) was named the Player of the Game for the X-Women, while Allison Balan received Player of the Game honors for Acadia.

X-Women goalkeeper Anna Thompson (Calgary, AB) earned the shut out victory in nets.

StFX have the rest of the weekend off and will resume AUS competition on September 19th and 20th with games at UPEI and Mount Allison, respectively.
