Capers dampen home opener

Sep 9, 2007 - The Cape Breton Capers dampened the X-Women and X-Men soccer home openers at Oland Stadium on Friday afternoon. In the women's game, Alyssa Kavanagh of the Capers scored five minutes into the game and the lone goal proved to be the only one needed as the Capers held onto the 1-0 victory over the X-Women.\r\n\r\nIn the second game of the doubleheader in men's action, the game was also decided on a one goal differential as the Capers came away with a 2-1 win over the blue & white. Matthew Wilkins opened the scoring in the game with a goal at the 9 minute mark for Cape Breton. X-Man Joe Phillips tied the game at the 21 minute mark but Wilkins again scored for Cape Breton just 11 minutes later to put the Capers into the lead. Both teams were kept off the scoresheet in the second half.\r\n\r\nThe next games for StFX take place on Wednesday, Sept. 12 when the X-Women and X-Men head to Dalhousie for afternoon games against the Tigers. They will be on the road again Saturday afternoon at Acadia, then will host the Saint Mary's Huskies Sunday at Oland Stadium at 1pm and 3pm.
