Axewomen overcome deficit to defeat X-Women
Acadia came back from a 12-0 deficit to defeat STFX 20-12 on Saturday afternoon
WOLFVILLE, NS – The Acadia women's rugby team came back from a 12-0 deficit to defeat STFX 20-12 on Saturday afternoon.
With both teams nationally ranked heading into the match, STFX at No. 7 and Acadia No. 8 in the country, plus both undefeated in AUS conference play, there was a playoff type atmosphere.
The teams played a tight opening half with no points scored as they headed into the halftime break with a scoreless draw.
Shona Galloway (Upper Tantallon, NS) finally opened the scoring the game for the X-Women in the 43rd minute, with Katie Murphy (Millvale, PE) kicking the convert. Janet Kennedy added to the STFX lead with her try just six minutes later.
Acadia got on the board in the 52nd minute with Mychael Paris (Halifax, NS) scoring her second try of the season.
Sarah Gunn (Scotsburn, NS) cut further into the STFX lead with a penalty goal with just under 20 minutes remaining.
To complete the comeback, it was Sara Grant (Melrose, NB) scoring in the 68th minute, with a Gunn convert, to give the Axewomen a 15-12 lead.
Grant, the Acadia player of the game, capped off the game with another try in the 75th minute to seal the win for the home team.
X-Women centre Courtney Gottselig (Vegreville, AB) earned player of the game for STFX.
Acadia will now head to Halifax next weekend to face Saint Mary's, while STFX will head to Charlottetown to play UPEI.
