X-Women compete south of the border in pre-season rugby matches

The STFX X-Women Rugby team headed south of the border this past weekend and played four pre-season exhibition matches against NCAA opponents. The blue and white posted a 3-0-1 record.

X-Women head coach Mike Cavanagh noted that his squad had a great trip and that, "Our team improved every time we got on the field. It was nice to knock off the rust and get playing in game action."

"We had some players who really stood up in the games which will make for an exciting season."

On Friday morning the X-Women kicked off their competition with a 17-14 win over Quinnipiac in Connecticut. Tries were scored by Sophie Beck, Drew Bell and Payton Erwin and Bell also booted one conversion in the X-Women win.

At the same location, also on Friday, STFX defeated Sacred Heart by a 24-20 score. X-Women tries came from Ella-Skye Fodor, Shona Galloway with a pair and Katie Douglas. Katie Murphy rounded out the scoring with two conversions.

On Saturday in Massachusetts, STFX played to a 17-17 tie with the American International College. Katie Murphy contributed a try and a convert and Emily Dodge and Katie Douglas also tallied tries.

The X-Women wrapped up the trip Sunday in Rhode Island with a 31-14 victory over Brown University. Tries were scored by Sophie Beck, Payton Erwin, Brianna Willis and Courtney Gottselig with two. Katie Murphy kicked two conversions and Sierra Wood one to wrap up the X points.

STFX will be back in non-conference action on Sunday, September 3rd when they travel to Acadia for the annual AUS pre-season tournament. The blue and white will play exhibition games against Dalhousie, UNB, Acadia and Saint Mary's.
