X-Women too much for Huskies

Halifax, N.S.– Wednesday evening saw the traditional Thanksgiving weekday game under the lights at Huskies Stadium as the Saint Mary's Huskies took on the St. Francis Xavier X-Women in AUS women's rugby action. The U SPORTS No. 7 ranked X-Women were too much for the Huskies as they came away with a 68-7 victory. 

The Huskies squad opened up the game by striking first as Elish Redshaw scampered 40 yards five minutes into the game for the try. She then proceeded to hit the convert to put the home squad up 7-0 early in the contest.

The X-Women answered back 10 minutes later as they capitalized on a turnover, with Maddy McInnis finding the touch line for the try. Danielle Franada with the convert evened the score at 7-7.

After a strong defensive effort by both teams the X-Women capitalized on winning scrums to take the lead in the final 15 minutes of the half. Two Tries from Hannah Ellis and another from McInnis along with two converts apiece by Franada and Maddy Ross increased the STFX lead to 28-7 at the half.

The second half saw the X-Women continue to win both scrums and line outs and keep the pressure on the Huskies as they struggled to get out of their end. Tries from Katarina Peric, Annie McMullon, Franada and Kathleen Dolan and four more converts by Franada increased the X-Women lead to 56-7.

The Huskies continued to battle as they tried to find pace but two more tries scored by Dolan and Franada along with another conversion boot by Franada sealed the game with a 68-7 final.

Player of the game for the Huskies was Brianna Willis.

AUS Subway player of the game for the X-Women was Danielle Franada who scored 24 points in the game with her two tries and seven conversions. Franada currently leads the AUS conference in scoring with 70 points. She also moved into sole possession of fifth place overall in AUS career scoring with 221.

Up next for the Huskies (0-5) will be a trip to the University of Prince Edward Island to take on the Panthers October 16.

The X-Women (3-2) travel to first place Acadia on October 15.
