Emma Taylor named CIS athlete of the week

StFX's Taylor, Guelph's Proudfoot honoured

OTTAWA (CIS) – Emma Taylor, a rugby player from St. Francis Xavier University, and Ross Proudfoot, a cross-country runner from the University of Guelph, are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 26, 2014.

Taylor, a fifth-year business administration student from Scotsburn, N.S., was named tournament MVP and player of the game in the gold-medal final at the AUS championship held in Wolfville, N.S. With her team trailing host Acadia 12-0 in the second half of the title match, the veteran lock scored two tries in a span of five minutes to force overtime, and the X-Women eventually prevailed 19-12 to capture their 17th straight conference title. Taylor, who was named AUS player of the year prior to the competition, now hopes to guide StFX to the CIS crown this weekend in Toronto.

Cross-country runners Jullien Flynn of McGill and Heather Petrick of Guelph, as well as soccer player Carley Radomski from Fraser Valley were also nominated for the women's award.

Proudfoot, a fifth-year human kinetics student from Sudbury, Ont., claimed the individual title and helped the Guelph men claim the team banner at the OUA championships in Kingston, last Saturday. The veteran runner outraced 92 competitors to win the 10-kilometre race by 11 seconds thanks to a time of 30:15.00. Proudfoot, who had previously captured the OUA gold medal in 2012, will try tom win his first CIS individual title on Nov. 8 in St. John's. 

Cross-country runners Scott Donald of StFX and Charles Philibert-Thiboutot of Laval, as well as soccer player Cameron Stokes from Victoria were the other male nominees.
