X-Women rugby improve to No. 3 in nation

The X-Women rugby team moved up one spot to No. 3 in the nation as the CIS Top Ten rankings were released today.

Spartans third leaders in three weeks in women's soccer

OTTAWA (CIS) – The Trinity Western University Spartans move up one position in this week's CIS women's soccer Top 10 to become the third team in as many coaches' polls this season to reach the top of the national rankings.
 
The Spartans, who have captured the CIS title each of the past two years, improved to 3-0-1 in league play over the past weekend thanks to a 3-1 win over Thompson Rivers and a 5-1 victory against UBC Okanagan.

The Western Mustangs (5-1-0), who received the No. 1 nod last Tuesday, drop to fourth place this week after suffering their first loss of the campaign, a 2-1 setback against York on Saturday. Undefeated York (6-0-0), which wasn't ranked a week ago, is No. 5 in the new poll.
 
In men's soccer, the top-ranked and defending two-time national champ UBC Thunderbirds are off to a perfect 4-0 start in Canada West action following a pair of comfortable wins over UNBC, 5-1 and 3-0.
 
York (5-0-1) edges UNB (4-0-0) for No. 2 in the new Top 10. The two teams were tied for second place last week.
 
In women's rugby, the reigning CIS titlist Alberta Pandas, who are set to open conference play on Sept. 20 against Lethbridge, top the coaches' poll for a third straight week.
 
Guelph (2-0) and StFX (2-0) both move up one spot this week to No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

FRC – CIS Football Top 10 (#3)
Laval still No. 1, Big Three resumes domination

OTTAWA (CIS) – The Laval Rouge et Or top the CIS football national rankings for the third time in as many polls this season after they moved to 2-0 in league play thanks to their second straight domination of a Top-10 opponent.

For the third consecutive week, the reigning two-time Vanier Cup champions received all 30 first-place votes and a perfect 300 points from the Football Reporters of Canada panel.

Rounding out the new Top 10 are the No. 2 Calgary Dinos (2-0 / 267 points / no change), No. 3 Western Mustangs (2-0 / 243 / no change), No. 4 McMaster Marauders (3-0 / 194 / no change), No. 5 Montreal Carabins (1-1 / 172 / no change), No. 6 Guelph Gryphons (2-1 / 128 / up one), No. 7 Saskatchewan Huskies (2-0 / 127 / down one), No. 8 Mount Allison Mounties (2-0 / 74 / up two), as well as the No. 9 Manitoba Bisons (1-1 / 61) and No. 10 Concordia Stingers (2-0 / 14), both unranked last Tuesday.
 
For the second week in a row, the Big Three of Laval, Calgary and Western proved why they are the overwhelming early season favourites within their respective conferences.
 
After opening the campaign on Sept. 6 with a 40-13 home win over archrival Montreal, top-ranked Laval travelled to Sherbrooke and crushed the Vert & Or – ranked No. 9 prior to the contest - 43-1 to set a new program record with its 20th consecutive overall victory dating back to 2012. The Rouge et Or will have a chance to tie McMaster's CIS mark of 21 straight wins on Saturday when they return to Sherbrooke to face Bishop's (0-2).
 
Meanwhile, Calgary and Western were also big winners on the road last Saturday, dominating UBC 59-11 and Queen's 43-12, respectively.
 
Other results from Top-10 teams this past weekend include No. 4 McMaster 37, Carleton 17 (at McMaster); No. 5 Montreal 41, Bishop's 7 (at Montreal); No. 6 Guelph 42, Ottawa 7 (at Ottawa); No. 7 Saskatchewan 42, Alberta 41 in overtime (at Alberta); No. 8 Mount Allison 27, StFX 25 (at StFX); No. 9 Manitoba 42, Regina 18 (at Manitoba); No. 10 Concordia 41, McGill 7 (at McGill).
 
The only Top-10 confrontation on this week's schedule sees No. 2 Calgary battle No. 7 Saskatchewan Friday at 7 p.m. Central in Saskatoon, live on CanadaWest.TV.
 

NOTES: McMaster's record run of 21 straight wins overall in 2011 and 2012 ended with a 37-14 loss to Laval in the Vanier Cup... After going 0-8 a year ago, Concordia is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2008 and is ranked nationally for the first time since Sept. 7, 2010 (No. 10)...
