X-Women rugby roll over AUS opponents

The X-Women rugby team continue to live up to their No. 1 ranking in the country at the expense of their AUS opponents. The blue and white improved to 5-0 on the season with two weekend wins:  81-0 over Saint Mary’s and 69-0 over UPEI.

With 419 points scored so far to date this season, the X-Women have already surpassed their 2008 AUS single season record of 416 points scored over six games. StFX has only allowed three points scored against them.

Dating back to 2002, the X-Women have only lost a single AUS regular season game as head coach Mike Cavanagh holds an impressive 60-1-2 record, along with an 11-0 AUS playoff record. They have won the AUS championship every year since the inception of the AUS women’s rugby conference in 2002.

Looking at this past weekend’s games, fullback Magali Harvey is on pace to break the AUS single season scoring record (135) currently held by former X-Woman Courtnay Malcolm, set in 2008. Harvey scored 27 points on the weekend, bringing her to 118, surpassing former StFX standout Ghislaine Landry (112 points in 2008) for second place on the AUS record list.

Harvey scored 19 points (1 try and 7 conversions) Saturday evening in StFX’s 81-0 win over Saint Mary’s on home turf at StFX Oland Stadium. The X-Women led 38-0 at half-time.

Reigning two-time AUS most valuable player Tyson Beukeboom scored two tries in the game, as did Vanessa Duffley and Amanda Thornborough.

Single tries were scored by Olivia DeMerchant, Stephanie Gillis, Emma Taylor, Ellen Murphy, Natalie Lesco and Lauren Agnew. Sabrina McDaid rounded out the StFX scoring with a second half convert.

Tina Hansen was named the Subway player of the game for her strong play at scrum half.

In Saturday’s 69-0 shutout over UPEI in Charlottetown, Harvey again led the StFX charge, scoring 27 points as she scored three tries and booted 6 converts as she earned Subway player of the game honors.

Tyson Beukeboom scored a pair of tries for the blue and white who led 42-0 at half-time. Single tries came from Alex Munroe, Sara Gandy, Sara Kaljuvee, Vanessa Duffley, Carolyn Stewart and Amanda Thornborough. Sabrina McDaid kicked one conversion.

The X-Women sit atop the AUS conference with a 5-0 record and will host the Acadia Axewomen (4-0) on Thursday, October 4th in a battle of undefeated teams. Game time is 5:00 pm at StFX Oland Stadium.
