X-Women rugby cruise to win in home opener

The CIS ranked No. 1 StFX X-Women cruised to a 73-3 win over the St. Thomas Tommies in AUS rugby action Wednesday afternoon at Oland Stadium in Antigonish. 
        
In their home opener, first-year hooker Catharine McKeigan scored a try on the first possession for the blue and white.
        
By late in the first half, the X-Women, who fielded a line-up comprised of starters and reserves, led 39-0 over the Tommies, the newest AUS team who began play this season in the Atlantic conference.

On the last play before halftime, the Tommies cut the lead to 39-3 on a field goal by Kiersten Steeves.
       
In the second half, the X-Women outscored the Tommies 34-0.

Lysa McGrath, Subway player of the game, and Jayme Ward led the blue and white offensive attack with two trys apiece.
        
Asya Bartley, Tyson Beukeboom, Sara Gandy, Sabrina McDaid, Mia Huysmans, Lauren Wilkes, Kelly Mitchell and Stephanie MacKinnon added trys as 11 different X-Women hit the score sheet.
        
McDaid chipped in four conversions, despite the swirling wind.
        
With the win, the X-Women move to 2-0 on the AUS regular season, while the first-year Tommies drop to 0-3.
        
The blue and white return to action Friday when they host the UPEI Panthers. The opening kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
