CIS athletes of the week (#1)
StFX’s Harvey, Montreal’s Obaid honoured

OTTAWA (CIS) – Magali Harvey, a rugby player from St. Francis Xavier University, and Sami Obaid, a soccer player from the University of Montreal, are the CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Sept. 9, 2012.

Harvey, a third-year arts student from Quebec City, set a pair of single-game conference records on Sunday as the top-ranked X-Women (1-0) kicked off the regular season with a spectacular 101-0 win over Saint Mary’s (0-1). The 5-foot-5 fullback scored 39 points to eclipse the previous AUS mark of 35 set in 2008 by former StFX great Ghislaine Landry, and registered 12 converts to break her own record of 10, a standard she established a year ago. Harvey is a two-time CIS all-Canadian and former AUS rookie of the year. 

McGill rugby player Brianna Miller, Ottawa soccer player Julia Francki and Trinity Western soccer player Krista Gommeringer were also nominated for the women’s award.

Obaid, a medicine student from Ottawa, was dominant in his first game in a Carabins uniform, tallying two goals and a pair of assists as ninth-ranked Montreal (1-0) opened league play with a 5-0 shutout against cross-town rival Concordia, last Thursday. After he helped set up the first goal of the contest late in the first half, the 25-year-old midfielder broke the game open with a pair of markers three minutes apart early in the second period. Obaid is in his first season with the Carabins after starting his university career at McGill. 

Soccer players Aaron McMurray of UNB and Marcus Johnstone of Alberta were the other male nominees.
