X-Women thump NCAA champs Army 82-5

The CIS No. 1 X-Women rugby team proved their worth Friday night as they dominated the defending NCAA Division 1 champion Army women’s rugby squad from West Point, NY by an 82-5 score. The CIS defending champion X-Women take home bragging rights as potentially the top women’s rugby intercollegiate team in North America as they easily handled Army in the clash of the nation’s top two teams.

The X-Women wasted no time in the exhibition match, scoring tries in the opening plays of the games, minutes apart. Beth McNeill was the first one to get the X-Women on the board, then the flood gates opened. The X-Women held a convincing 53-0 lead at half-time. When all was said and done, StFX posted 82 points on the board, the most since a 105-0 romp over Saint Mary’s in AUS regular play on Oct. 6, 2010.

Seven different X-Women crossed the try line in the game, including Dani Robb, Tyson Beukeboom and Magali Harvey who each scored three tries (15 points apiece). Reigning CIS tournament MVP Harvey led the X-Women attack with 22 total points, booting six converts to add to her three tries scored.

Amanda Thornborough scored two tries in the game for X, while teammates McNeill, Asya Bartley and Sarah Kaljuvee added single tries.

The X-Women will enjoy a rest in New York state today and resume exhibition competition on Sunday morning with a game against Brown University.
