StFX defeats Laval 11-8 in exhibition women�s rugby action

The StFX X-Women defeated the Laval Rouge et Or 11-8 in exhibition rugby action Sunday afternoon at Oland Stadium in Antigonish, NS.
In a tightly contested battle between national powers, X-Women freshman Dani Robb scored the winning try midway through the second half, completing a passing play from Amanda Thornborough and Magali Harvey.
The visiting Rouge et Or took a 3-0 advantage early in the first half on a field goal by Claudiane Renaud.
The X-Women knotted the score on the first of two field goals from player of the game Harvey in the opening half.
With the second kick from Harvey, the X-Women took a 6-3 lead to halftime.
In a back-and-forth, physical second half, the Rouge et Or jumped to an 8-6 lead on a try from Claudia Kedney-Bolduc. The conversion attempt by Renaud sailed wide.
The X-Women responded quickly with the Robb try, with Harvey missing the conversion attempt.
With less than two minutes remaining, Renaud had an opportunity to tie the score with a 32-yard field goal, but the low line drive sailed wide left.
The game was the second in as many days against the Quebec conference rivals. On Saturday afternoon in Truro, Laval defeated the split-squad X-Women by a 23-7 margin. Harvey led the StFX scoring with a try and a conversion.
In the shortened matches, the X-Women posted a 2-1 tournament record. StFX opened the day with a 17-0 win over the Nova Scotia Senior women's team. Robb, Lisa Gauthier and Emma Taylor scored trys for the X-Women, with Danielle Mayo adding a conversion.
The X-Women scored a 22-0 victory over the Acadia Axewomen for their second win of the Truro tournament. Harvey led the offence with a conversion and try. Mia Hysman, Emma Gibbons and Lauren Wilks added trys for the X-Women.
StFX, the defending CIS champions, opens the regular season Sunday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. when they host Acadia at Oland Stadium.
