Reigning champ Lethbridge tops first rugby rankings of 2010

OTTAWA (CIS) – The three-time defending national champion University of Lethbridge Pronghorns top the first CIS women’s rugby Top 10 of the 2010 season.
In soccer, reigning CIS champions Trinity Western (women) and Laval (men) remain atop the rankings for a second straight week.
The Pronghorns, who captured a third consecutive Monilex Trophy last fall thanks to a 20-3 gold-medal triumph over St. Francis Xavier, received 69 points in the inaugural rugby coaches poll of 2010.
The Guelph Gryphons, who have claimed CIS bronze each of the past three years, go into the new season at No. 2 thanks to a 63-point tally, while StFX is ranked third with 62 points.
Rounding out the inaugural Top 10 are No. 4 Concordia (44), No. 5 Laval (38), No. 6 Alberta (34), No. 7 Western (25), No. 8 UBC (24), No. 9 McMaster (20) and No. 10 Queen’s (10).
The CIS women’s rugby regular schedule kicks off this weekend with 10 games in Ontario, Quebec and the AUS, while conference play in Canada West starts on Sept. 24. Lethbridge opens the defence of its CIS title at Victoria on the 24th.
Trent University will host the CIS championship in Peterborough, Ont., from Nov. 4 to 7.
In women’s soccer, Trinity Western (0-0-0) remained at No. 1 after receiving 50 points in the coaches poll. The Spartans open conference play this weekend with a pair of road contests, at Lethbridge on Saturday and at Calgary on Sunday.
The regular season got underway on Labour Day weekend in Ontario. No. 4 Queen’s (2-0-0) got off to an impressive start with a 4-0 shutout of Carleton and a dominating 9-1 win over Trent, a victory that included a five-goal performance by Jacqueline Tessier of Winnipeg.
In men’s soccer, No. 1 Laval (0-0-0) opens its CIS title defence at home Friday against UQTR, before hosting UQAM on Sunday.
OUA conference play this past weekend saw No. 4 Toronto settle for a 1-1 draw against Nipissing before rebounding with a 2-0 win over Laurentian.
