X-Women Rugby to play Brown University

Antigonish, NS—The X-Women rugby team, currently ranked second overall in the nation, are scheduled to play a pair of exhibition games south of the border on the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend. The X-Women will meet the NCAA Division I number one ranked Brown University on Friday evening, followed by another exhibition game Saturday afternoon against the Beantown senior women’s rugby team.

“These games in the States will be great competition for our team,” comments 11-year veteran StFX head coach Mike Cavanagh. “Brown University is currently ranked number one in the country and have a very strong program, so it will be a good test for our ladies midway through our season and leading up to our playoff drive.”

The X-Women won a silver medal at the 2008 CIS national championship and are the 11-time defending AUS champions. They are currently 5-1 in overall competition this season and 4-0 in AUS competition, outscoring their opponents in regular season play by a 254-19 margin. Their one loss came in exhibition play at the hands of the two-time defending Lethbridge Pronghorns by a close 17-12 score.

Brown University have been ranked number one in the NCAA for the past three weeks. They enter the match against StFX with a 6-0-1 record with wins over defending national champion Penn State and nationally ranked UMass and Vassar. Brown has outscored its’ opponents this season 247-12.

The X-Women will take on the Beantown senior women’s rugby team on Saturday in Boston, MA. The Beantown rugby club has been in existence since 1976 and has established itself as one of the nation's preeminent women's rugby teams, having competed at numerous national championships and winning six national titles.

Upon returning from their exhibition trip to the United States, the X-Women’s next AUS game will take place on Sunday, Oct. 18 when they host the UPEI Panthers at 2:00 pm at StFX Oland Stadium.
