X-Women rugby hold steady at #2

National leaders stay put in soccer and rugby


OTTAWA (CIS) – The top of the leaderboard remains unchanged this week in CIS soccer and rugby.

The reigning CIS champion Trinity Western Spartans lead the women’s soccer coaches poll for the fourth time in four weeks, the Montreal Carabins are ranked No. 1 in the country in men’s soccer for the second straight week, while the two-time defending national champion Lethbridge Pronghorns have topped all three women’s rugby polls thus far in 2009.

In women’s rugby, the No. 1-Pronghorns (0-0) finally kick off conference play Friday night when they host Calgary.

The No. 2-StFX X-Women, No. 3-Guelph Gryphons and No. 4-Laval Rouge et Or all improved to 2-0 on the season last weekend.

StFX, CIS silver medallist in 2008, crushed Acadia 85-7. Guelph, which defeated Laval last fall to claim CIS bronze, outscored Waterloo 48-5. The Rouge et Or blanked McGill 34-0.

Following in order in the third coaches poll of the campaign are No. 5-Concordia (2-0), No. 6-Western Ontario (2-0), No. 7-Alberta (0-0), No. 8-McMaster (2-0), No. 9-Queen’s (2-0) and No. 10-Brock (1-1).
