Ruggers tackle tenth title

Oct 28, 2007 - For a 10th consecutive year, the St. Francis Xavier X-Women are AUS women‰Ûªs rugby champions.\r\n\r\nKim Armstrong and two-time conference MVP Ghislaine Landry each notched a pair of tries and StFX stifled Saint Mary‰Ûªs with its defensive play as the X-Women blanked the Huskies 29-0 in the AUS championship Saturday in Antigonish.\r\n\r\n"The focus was on defence," StFX head coach Mike Cavanagh said. "We won the toss and decided to take the wind in the second half. So in the first half, they had the wind and didn‰Ûªt get into our half and we just tackled, tackled, tackled. I was very happy with the way the girls played defensively."\r\n\r\nThe X-Women led 10-0 at the half thanks to Armstrong‰Ûªs two majors.\r\n\r\nLandry, who moved from her regular position at fullback to fly half for Saturday‰Ûªs final, scored early into the second half and then added her CIS-leading 15th try of the season late.\r\n\r\n"We thought we‰Ûªd mix things up with Landry," Cavanagh said. "In our last game against SMU they had been keying on her in her position. So we mixed it up and she did a great job today."\r\n\r\nAUS rookie of the year Amanda Bedard had the other try for StFX Courtnay Malcolm had two converts.\r\n\r\nThe X-Women, the defending national champions, begin their title defence this week at the four-day CIS championship, beginning Thursday in London, Ont.
